“Her mom is getting in the way of our relationship”

Hi I’m Dee and I’ve been friends with this girl since we were 12 and we’ve been dating for most of that time, I’ve really fallen in love with her. So we are both 19 now and in our senior year in high school and she really wants a life with me after we graduate.

I really want to marry her but the only problem is her mom, she’s never really liked me and I’ve never given her a reason not to, I have a feeling it’s a race thing.

So my question is, should I marry her knowing her mom won’t be happy of our marriage, or hurt the only girl I ever’d loved?

I think its wise to ask this question and that you should be asking many more. Have you two discussed living arrangements? Who pays for what bills? What about your partners thoughts on pets and kids? School? Traveling expenses? Can you two afford to pay to get married? Who sleeps on which side of the bed?

You don’t have to decide any of that right away! Take your time and learn to live independently from your parents. See if she advocates for you in your relationship. Go to college. Learn to pay all your bills preferably on your own before you move in together. And MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A EXIT PLAN WITH 3 MONTHS RENT IF YOU DO! Just because you are head over heals for her now doesn’t mean things are a strait path to marriage.

You two are still learning who you are individually. Now I know couples who have met and married in high school still together, but that’s against the odds. You two might be one of these couples, but there is no rush. Divorce is expensive. Dealing with a in law who you don’t know why she’s angry is miserable, but can be worked through. Plenty of people aren’t favorite in laws. They just move away and deal with them on holidays.

    Best of luck to you.
